The conversation will be dedicated to Arijs Skride, one of the most significant Latvian landscape painters of the 20th century – his artistic development, painterly language, and place in Latvian art history.
Ansis Vasks is the author of the monograph “Arijs Skride”, published in 2007. It is the first comprehensive publication dedicated to the artist’s life and work, allowing us to see Skride beyond only a few of his better-known works.
Although Arijs Skride is considered one of Latvia’s important landscape painters, his contribution to Latvian art history has often remained insufficiently recognised. During the conversation, Ansis Vasks will address the artist’s connection to the Landscape Painting Studio led by Professor Vilhelms Purvītis, the legacy of the Purvītis School, and the gradual formation of Skride’s individual painterly language.
The conversation will touch on Latvian rural landscapes, city views, ports, marines, market squares, landscapes of Latgale, and scenes of everyday life in Skride’s work. Particular attention will be paid to the way the artist captured nuances of light, space, mood, and atmosphere in his paintings.
The event offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Arijs Skride’s work and to view his art within the broader context of Latvian art history.
