Senior mornings are back!

Zuzeum Art Centre invites you to relaxed morning conversations about contemporary art. This time, we will explore Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm’s exhibition How It Is. In the exhibition, the artist invites us to look at everyday objects from an unusual perspective – with deformed cars, exaggerated shapes, and absurd ideas. Why like this? Why might it confuse or even upset us? Why does the artist work with these materials?

Together, we’ll seek answers to these and other questions, joined by Latvian sculptors who will participate in each senior morning. It’s a unique opportunity not only to explore art more deeply but also to meet artists who work with diverse materials and ideas in their everyday practice. A different sculptor will join us each time.

We’ll begin the morning with a guided tour led by an art mediator. The third senior morning will feature sculptor Bruno Strautiņš. At the end, we’ll gather for tea and conversation in the Zuzeum Living Room, where you can share your impressions in a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

Bruno Strautiņš (b. 1944) is a sculptor who, in the 1970s, introduced significant changes in Latvian and Baltic sculpture, expanding the range of themes, emphasizing the aesthetic value of form and materials, while preserving traditions characteristic of Latvian art. He graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, studying under masters such as Emīls Melderis, Alberts Terpilovskis, Ojārs Siliņš, and Igors Vasiļjevs. He has taught at the Art Academy of Latvia, where he led the Sculpture Department for many years.

Strautiņš’s works include small-form sculpture, monumental and memorial works, and, in particular, medal art, in which he has created a contemporary stylistic language and shifted the paradigm of plastic values. His spatial and abstract works convey creative freedom, philosophical thinking, and an interest in the relationship between proportion, scale, and form, often revealing deep subtexts, flows of association, and symbolism.

His most notable works are held in the Museum of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, the Latvian National Museum of Art, and in private collections in Latvia and abroad. Strautiņš has received numerous awards, including the Order of the Three Stars, as well as distinctions at both international and local exhibitions.

Seniors are especially welcome, but participants of all ages are invited to join. We look forward to seeing you!
