Dr. art. Kristīne Ogle is one of the researchers of Arijs Skride’s artistic practice. In her lecture, she will focus on the artist’s professional development at the Landscape Painting Studio of the Art Academy of Latvia, led by Professor Vilhelms Purvītis, and on how Purvītis’s personality, pedagogical principles, and the studio environment influenced the young artist’s path towards an independent artistic language.
The lecture will address Arijs Skride’s years of study, his relationship with his professor, and his gradual artistic maturation. Particular attention will be paid to his early studies and paintings, in which the influence of Purvītis’s painting can still be felt, while the individual qualities that later became the foundation of Skride’s art already begin to emerge.
The lecture will present the Purvītis School not only as a set of specific painterly techniques, but also as a system of thought and values centred on independence, a close connection with nature, and the development of an individual artistic vision.
The event offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Arijs Skride’s early creative period, the significance of the Purvītis School in Latvian landscape painting, and to view Skride not only as an outstanding student of Purvītis, but also as an independent landscape painter with his own recognisable view of Latvian nature.
