🎤 Zuzeum Art Centre invites you to a discussion “Who calls the tune? Art and conjuncture”, which will take place on April 11, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the Living Room.
📅 Thursday, April 11, at 6:00 PM.
🎟️ Admission to the event is free with prior registration. Limited seats available.
🗣️ The discussion will be conducted in Latvian.
🔍 What is the place and role of art from the Soviet occupation period in today’s Latvian cultural landscape?
🔍 In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, should the accessibility of artworks permeated with communist ideology be particularly edited for the wider society?
🔍 When analyzing Soviet-era art, should the presence of censorship and repression by the authorities of that time be taken into account in the authors’ creative work, or can artifacts from that time only be interpreted and evaluated from the perspective of today’s experience?
🔍 The artist’s choice – to follow only their creative path’s azimuth or to respect the political-economic conjuncture of the time – have these choices been made only by the artists of the Soviet era?
🔍 Where lies the artist’s responsibility when creating art?
These and other questions will be discussed in the debate by artist and curator Sandra Krastiņa, artist Helēna Heinrihsone, artist Sabīne Vernere, art curator and researcher Līna Birzaka-Priekule, playwright and translator, leading playwright of Dailes Theatre Matīss Gricmanis, and actor Vilis Daudziņš from The New Riga Theatre. The conversation will be moderated by Lolita Tomsone, director of the Žanis Lipke Memorial.
The live stream of the discussion will also be available on the Zuzeum Facebook account.
