Sculpture and objects
While smaller than the applied and decorative arts, the painting or graphic art collections size-wise, the sculpture collection is remarkable for its diversity. The collection comprises works representing a variety of eras and media, spanning the time between the 1920s and the present day, from the cast bronze figures by the first Latvian woman sculptor Marta Skulme to the intricate wall compositions by Daria Melnikova.
A significant part of the collection consists of table medals created by the sculptor, graphic artist and educator Kārlis Baumanis, whose unique style – a roughened-up vibrant surface texture and subtly discernible shape transitions – reflects his erudition and respect for the subject of the portrait.
Some of the most significant artists represented in the sculpture collection are Oļegs Skarainis, Alberts Terpilovskis, Andris Breže, Olga Šilova, Aigars Bikše, Ginters Krumholcs, Indriķis Ģelzis and Marks Rozencovs.
A rapidly growing segment of the sculpture collection is devoted to contemporary international artists, including some of the most prominent figures such as Ai Weiwei, Shuang Li, Jeff Koons, Thomas Houseago, Arghavan Khosravi, David Altmejd, Genesis Belanger, Alicja Kwade, Elmgreen & Dragset, Thomas Mickalene.
In selecting the represented international artists, particular attention is paid to the younger generation of Estonian sculptors who stand out among others with their unique and profoundly individual style of expression.
