Zandele Art Market
The Zuzeum Art Centre invites you to the Zandele Art Market, where you will be able to purchase works by Latvian artists. Proceeds from the fair will go towards developing new exhibition projects at Zuzeum, researching the Zuzāns Collection, as well as the Zuzeum Studio artists’ residency programme.
The Zuzāns Collection is constantly growing, expanding, improving and maturing. It must be reviewed from time to time for the purposes of refocusing and setting new strategic goals, preserving and developing the collection and securing its place in the global art context. Like society itself, art is subject to transformation, bringing attendant shifts in the tastes, interests and vision of collectors.
The Zuzāns Collection’s first works were acquired in the early 1990s. With the opening of the Zuzeum Art Centre, the 30-year-old collection entered a new stage. The collection gained new exhibiting opportunities. It has also become more international, with the development of a foreign art branch. However, due to the pandemic, plans for a new wing to house the collection have been suspended, as restrictions on activities reduce the income the centre can earn from ticket sales and renting out space. Nevertheless, Zuzeum continues unveiling new projects that require funding. As the team reviewed and re-evaluated the collection, it was decided that a part of the collection would be offered to other art lovers. This will enable us to retain the focus of the collection and find new homes for some of the works, as well as sourcing funding for sustainable projects.
At the Zandele Art Market, you will find an extensive range of fine arts and applied art works, including paintings and graphics, posters, drawings, porcelain objects and medallions.
The painters represented at the fair include Džemma Skulme, Jānis Pauļuks, Jānis Osis, Leonīds Āriņš, Juris Dimiters, Ritums Ivanovs and Dace Lielā. There are also graphics by Māris Ārgalis, Voldemārs Irbe and Aleksandra Beļcova.
Posters by Ilmārs Blumbergs, Juris Dimiters, Georgs Smelters, Jāzeps Pīgoznis and Laimonis Šenbergs will also be available, as well as table medallions by Kārlis Baumanis dedicated to famous persons and significant places and events in Latvia.
Connoisseurs of porcelain can choose from figurines made at Riga’s A/S M. S. Kuzņecovs Porcelain, Faience and Pottery Factory, the M. V. Lomonosov Porcelain Factory in Leningrad, the Gorodnica Porcelain Factory and Iļģuciems Glass Factory.
The Zandele Art Market also features original abstract works by Visvaldis Ziediņš, including original technique works, graphics and three-dimensional objects, such as the artist’s revered “box” compositions. There are also still lifes, urban and country landscapes and original technique comic abstract compositions by Zentas Logina. Art books and catalogues will also be on sale at the fair.
Entry to the market is EUR 4, EUR 2 for students and pensioners, and free for children up to 18 years of age. The entry ticket for the fair is also valid for the new exhibition in the small (yoga and architecture) hall.
The Zandele Art Market will open its doors at 12.00 on 4 December. Visitors will be welcome every day from 12.00 to 19.00, except on the Christmas and New Year holidays. Entry permitted only with a valid Covid passport.
The illustration Birth Control by Belgian artist Domien Delforge is used for the art fair poster with the artist’s permission.
