The talk will be held in Latvian.
Queer art is a blind spot in the Latvian contemporary art scene – such is the starting point of the conversation taking place within the public programme of Zuzeum exhibition Field of Vision curated by Tīna Pētersone. Although numerous artists a identify as queer and openly reflect on their identity in their art, queer art as a phenomenon is not conceptually and institutionally established.
What defines queer art (identity of the artist, subject matter, form…)? What are its chronological frameworks? Can queer art only be created by queer people? What is the relationship between queer art and activism?
In a conversation animated by philosopher and curator Igors Gubenko, these and other questions will be addressed by artist Andris Grinbergs, curator and researcher Andra Silapētere, artist and activist Mētra Saberova and poet and literary scholar Kārlis Vērdiņš.
