On June 5 and 6, Riga will host one of the most significant theatrical events of recent years. As part of the visit from Schaubühne Berlin, renowned director Thomas Ostermeier will present his play “History of Violence” in the National Theater.
A day before the premiere, we are inviting you to engage in a public talk about the state of contemporary theater in Germany and Latvia, the place of theater in society, and the future of contemporary performance art in a conversation with Thomas Ostermeier at the Zueum.
Ostermeier, the artistic director of Schaubühne Berlin since 2009 and a recipient of the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, is a central figure in contemporary world theater. His productions are celebrated internationally and have been featured in major festivals across Europe, including Avignon, Edinburgh, and Vienna.
The talk will take place in conjunction with the performance of History of Violence, one of Ostermeier’s most acclaimed productions, based on the autobiographical novel by French author Édouard Louis. This unique opportunity will allow attendees to gain insights into Ostermeier’s creative process, his perspectives on theatrical storytelling, and the influences that shape his work.
During the public talk, Ostermeier will reflect on the role of cultural context in shaping theatre in Germany and Latvia, the presence of trauma and memory in contemporary theatrical narratives, the ways in which technology and innovation are changing audience engagement, and differences in dramatic techniques.
This public talk is a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of the leading voices in theater today and to discuss the future of performance art in Europe.
The conversation will be moderated by theatre critic Zane Radzobe.
